Blog 4 - Guilt in the Guts

The meat was hard to eat. Today Jack hunted his "pig" o so proudly. Today was also the day a ship "just so happened" to come during the twenty or thirty minutes the fire was out. I'm starting to dislike him.

The sun rose this morning to bring about opalescent colors. Today we followed our usual routine, town meeting, work on huts, swim, and stuff like that. I felt a strange sensation arise in my heart. I looked up to what once seemed like a mirage. It was a faint outline of a ship. I stood incredulously, I felt so golden inside. But I remembered one thing.

"The signal fire"

"What, What? Ralph what? A ship? Tell me." Piggy whimpered.

I did and did not want to turn around at the same time.

"Preposterous."

The fire, the fire. It was OOOOUUUUTTTT!!!!!

I sprinted immediately with the bigguns following me. The mountain seemed taller and steeper than ever before. I panted, finally reaching the top. Looking down the others were right behind me and the shrill screams of Piggy in the distance.

"Piggy."

"Piggy?"

"Piggy!"

"The Specs! Of course!"

By the time Piggy arrived the boat was gone. How did the fire even go out? I assigned someone to watch it. Who? That was an irrelevant question. But how, that's what I wanted to know.

Jack and every boy on the island came back from stupid hunting.

"Look, a pig"

Jack and the boys gloated for hours about how handsome and great they were, or something similar to that.

"The Ship" I said

Everyone was still proud of the pig.

"The Ship! It came!" I shouted

The fact that they implicated they were more concerned about meat than a life was disgusting enough. But when Piggy tried to say something Jack turned around and punched him in the stomach. Then, he punched his specs off. He broke his specs. This malevolent freak, he ruined his vision forever.

Here's the worst part:

"Oh, I'm soooooo sorry (Sure) I sorry for all the stuff I did."

"Now, everyone work now!"

He made everyone fall right into his trap. If I said one rude thing, I could easily be killed. I stood disgusted, but had to suck it up and keep moving.

Later that night, Jack cooked the pig in the fire and we all sat around it. He offered me meat. The thought of real food gyrated around my head and I took it. He refused to give any to Piggy. Simon gave him some and got yelled at. As I ate the meat I couldn't keep my eyes off of him. I felt a strange feeling as stared down at my meat. It tasted excessively bland. It didn't taste bad but it didn't taste good. The other boys loved their meat but I couldn't get myself to enjoy it.

I don't know what Jack is thinking, but I'm going to have to come up with a secretive way to defeat him.

William,

The inclusion of dialogue in your journal makes it very enjoyable to read.

REVISION: Write 5-10 sentences that further describe the scene around the pig barbeque. If Ralph is disgusted by eating Jack's kill does this influence the way it looks to him? Adding this detail will help reinforce Ralph's revulsion and growing dislike for Jack.

Mr. Shaddox, here is the revision you asked for:
