Blog Quest - Interview

Q: Today we are going to have an exclusive one-on-one interview with Jack from Lord of the Flies by William Golding. So Jack, what is it like being stranded on an island with the boys?

A: It sucks. They all cry like little babies and are excessively lazy. I can't stand Piggy, Ralph, and Simon to name a few.

Q: Why can't you stand Them?
A: I'll give a description of each of them.

Ralph: I don't like Ralph because he thinks everyone should have equal say in decisions. Decision making should be for leaders like me only. Also, he is only concerned about the fire. He doesn't want anyone to hunt for meat. It's stupid because I want to eat meat and I can't.

Piggy: I don't like him because he's whiny and think he's important. He tries to lead. He's fat, ugly, lazy, and stupid and he should go away. He thinks he's scientific but he's not. He won't let us use his glasses to light the fire.

Q: Didn't you beat him up and break his glasses so he would never see again? All because he repeated what Ralph said? Why didn't you punch Ralph?
A: Look William (Laughs), Don't any of the readers understand? I want to be a leader and assist these boys. They voted Ralph leader. If I punched him all the boys would hate me. If I punch Piggy they won't hate me because no one really likes him. Besides, there's something about Ralph. He's someone I respect. He has good qualities. And Piggy is someone who is a nuisance in my opinion. It felt good to punch him.

Q: Alright what about Simon? Why do you hate him?

Simon: The fact is simple. These olduns have a super soft heart. It's disgusting. Simon has the softest heart of them all. He finds it "Polite" to help the littluns get fruit. He gave Piggy meat. Ughhh. A leader needs to push all of the useless losers out of the way, and do his job.

Q: A lot of the boys hate you and a lot of the boy's respect you. Can you explain this situation?

A: Everyone hates me because I like an anti-democratic society. There should be a king and it should be me. They Respect me because I can kill the "beastie".

Q: A lot of the boys share concern of the beastie. As you just said they respect you because you tell them you believe it and you will kill it. Do you actually believe in it?

A: This might be a shocker for all the readers (Laughs). I don't believe there's a beastie and I'm only saying I'm going to kill it for their respect. It's their weakness and I'm trying to use it against them.

Q: Now were going to take the time to have you answer some of the reader's questions. First is Pablo, 10, from Seattle, Washington. He wants to know how will you eventually handle the beastie concerns. If it's not real how can you kill it? Won't their respect fade eventually?

A: That's a great question Pablo. We were actually headed towards Seattle for an international school relations meeting. But the plane had to crash. To answer your question Pablo I will need to give that question more thought. While I go hunting for pigs alone I think about it. Tricking societies into believing in you is very difficult. I'm sorry but I really can't answer that question yet.

Q: Cindy from Pasadena, California, who's 15 wants to ask you why you hate the conch?

A: Well Cindy, like I said earlier I think the idea of a fair democracy is preposterous. The conch assists the boys in all having a fair opportunity to speak. Like I said in the book decision making needs to be for the olduns.

Q: Well thanks a lot and I hope you survive on the island.

A: Well thank you William.
